Arvindh Chithambaram & Priyamvada emerge champions

11 year old Arvindh Chithambaram from Dolphin School, Madurai did his home state Tamil Nadu proud clinching the National title in the boys section in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship 2010 at Nehru Stadium, Chennai. Third seeded Arvindh needed a draw in the final round against Delhi boy Harshal Shahi and will composed and cool play, he held the fifith seeded Shahi to a draw. Arvindh finished clear first with 9.5 points from eleven rounds, followed by seven others at 8.5 points. Hetul Shah of Gujarat and Harshal Shahi of Delhi took the second and third spot respectively with high tie-break scores.

The girls section, saw the fight on for the second spot onwards, thanks to Priyamvada winning the title with a round to spare. Ivana Maria Furtada (Goa) and Tejaswini Sagar (Maharashtra) took the second and third place respectively. Priyamvada tallied a whopping 10.0 points from eleven rounds, while Ivana and Tejaswini finished 1.5 points behind at 8.5 points.

The champions were awarded cash prizes of Rs. 10000 (Rupees ten thousand only) each, which came from a prize fund of Rs.55000 sponsored by RMK Group. The prizes were distributed by title sponsor Shri. R S Munirathinam, Chairman, RMK Residential Sr. Sec School and RMK Group in the presence of Shri. P R Venketrama Raja, President, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association. Also present in the prize function were Shri JCD Prabhakar, Chairman, Organizing Committee and Vice President, TNSCA, Shri D V Sundar, Secy, All India Chess Federation and Shri Y Pradeep, Secy, RMK Residential Sr Sec School.

Priyamvada emerges champion with a round to spare
Guntur based Priyamvada Karmcheti (9.5) emerged the champion in the Girls section with a round to spare in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship 2010 at Nehru Stadium, Chennai. A massive two point lead ahead of second placed Ivana, Meghna, Savant, Tejaswini and Shiny, gives the Andhra girl a clear title.

Overnight leader Madurai boy Aravindh Chithambaram Vr thrilled the local hearts defeating higher rated Hetul Shah in the top board. The crucial penultimate round win takes Aravindh to 9.0 points, one point clear of seond placed Hetul Shah, Arjun Bharat and Harshal Shahi, all at 8.0 points. A draw in the final round by Aravindh will bring the Boys title to Tamil Nadu. Defending champion and top seed Karthikeyan Murali is further down at 7.5 points. The final round on the morrow promises to be exciting with several kids having the possibility of becoming the champion.

Arvindh Chithambaram along with Hetul Shah (both 8.0 points) shared the lead in the boys section after the ninth round in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship at Nehru Stadium, here today.

Following the leaders were Arjun Bharat and Harsha Bharathakoti at 7.5 points. Priyamvada Karmcheti led the girls section with cent percent score at 9.0 points. In the top board game Priyamvada defeated Shiny Das. A draw in the final round will the Andhra girl the national title. Two points behind at 7.0 points were the quartet CH Meghna, Vaishali, Shiny Das and Ivana Maria Furtado. Two more rounds remain in this national qualifier.

Arvindh Chithambaram shares lead in Boys section

Arvindh Chithambaram along with Y Grahesh and Hetul Shah (all 7.0 points) shared the lead in the boys section after the eighth round in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship at Nehru Stadium, here today.

Following the leaders were six players at 6.5 points including top seed and world championship silver medalist Karthikeyan Murali, Pranav Vijay and Sai Viswesh (all from Tamil Nadu).

Priyamvada Karmcheti led the girls section with cent percent score at 8.0 points. In the top board game Priyamvada defeated Tamil Nadu girl Manjula. The win helped Priyamvada maintain her one point lead over Shiny Das, who plays the Andhra girl in the top board tomorrow.

Grahesh and Priyamvada share lead

Andhra duo Priyamvada Kramseti (7.0) and Y Grahesh (6.5) led the table with in the Girls and Boys section after the seventh round in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship at Nehru Stadium, Chennai. Overnight leader Priyamvada kept her lead defeating CH Meghna. With cent percent score, Priyamvada established herself as the favorite for title. With four rounds to go, it it still too early to make a call. One full point behind the leader were Manjula, Tejaswini Sagar and Shiny Das at 6.0 points.

In the Boys section, Y Grahesh from Rajahmundry moved into sole lead thanks to his victory with black pieces in the second board against Chennai boy M Sabhareesh. In the top board, Rakesh Kumar Jena of Orissa was held to a draw by Harshal Shahi of Delhi. Grahesh leads with 6.5 points, followed by five players at 6.0 points. Top seed world silver medalist Karthikeyan Murali is further half a point behind at 5.5 points.

Bansi Prathima and Priyamvada share lead

Andhra girls Bansi Prathima and Priyamvada Kramseti led the table with 5.0 points after the fifth round in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship at Nehru Stadium, Chennai.

Bansi Prathima (1573) who won the National Under 9 title in the same playing hall last year, is on way to a repeat show, as she defeated top seed Ivana Maria Furtado (1839) moving into joint lead. Priyamvada (1615) on the other hand, scored over second seed Maharashtra girl Bakshi Rutuja (1729) taking the joint leader spot at 5.0 points. Following them are the duo CH Meghna and Gauri Keshav Hadkonkar at 4.5 points.

The Boys section, saw the lead being shared by eleven players led by top seed Karthikeyan Murali. While the top two boards ended in draws, rest of the higher rated players in the top boards moved into shared lead.

Top seed and world youth silver medalist Karthikeyan Murali of Tamil Nadu shared the lead with three others with 4/4 score after four rounds in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship at Nehru Stadium, Chennai.

M Sabhareesh, Arjun Bharat and R U Anantharam topped the table with Karthikeyan Murali, while Priyamvada Karmcheti, Bakshi Rutuja and Bansi Prathima kept the lead with 4.0 points in the Girls section. Ivana Maria Furtado, the top seed in the Girls section, found herself pegged back by half a point, being held to a draw by Sribrinda Rout of Orissa in the previous round.

Tomorrow is the final two round day. Seven more rounds remain in this national qualifier for the Asian and World youth events.
Karthikeyan Murali & Ivana Maria Furtado leads

Led by world championship silver medallists Karthikeyan Murali (Tamil Nadu) and Ivana Maria Furtado (Goa) the seeded players had comfortable victories in the two rounds completed so far, in the RMK Residential Sr. Sec. School 24th National Under 11(B&G) Chess Championship 2010 at Media Hall, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai here today.

Surprises were few in the opening round, as the annual mega event started in a quiet manner.unrated In a minor upset, M.S. Arun held higher rated TN boy Pranav Vijay to a draw.103 FIDE rated boys make this a very strong event for kids under 11 years of age.
Among the leaders were favorites Karthikeyan Murali, Hetul Shah, Harshal Sahi, Arjun Bharat and among the GIrls the favorites were : Olympic medalist and top seed Ivana Mario Furtado, Bakshi Rutuja, C H Meghana etc.,

Nine rounds remain to be played in this 355 player Swiss event that concludes on 6th May, 2010. This event serves as a qualification for the Asian and World Chess Championships.

National Under 11 Inauguration

The event of national importance was inaugurated by Dr. K Vaithianathan, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, who extolled that chess performers were standing examples for other sports. For, it is here these less performing sportpersons, take inspiration, thanks to the consistency of Indian chess performers world wide.

Mr. R S Munirathinam, Chairman, RMK Group who spoke on the occasion, elaborated on the levels of encouragement their group extends to chess. He added, "RMK group has become a regular supporter of chess, as it has become a well managed and performing sport, at all levels. For the second year in a row we are holding a national event, and I forsee our role extending in future".

Mr J C D Prabhakaran, Chairman, Organising Committee and Vice President, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association said, "Chess has a great culture that runs for several decades in Tamil Nadu, for it is a form of hospitality that the state extends for all other states in this cerebral sport".

This event which is also a qualifier for the Asian and World Under 12 Championships for the year 2011 has attracted around 355 entries, with 240 boys and 115 girls participating.
